IN MEMORY OF IAN KENNEDY
Former Mastering Engineer
"A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men" wrote author Herman Melville "and among those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects." And thus we begin the biography of Ian. He first touched a violin at the age of five. Perhaps it was the scripted plan for him to be first violinist in an orchestra or concerto ensemble. Perhaps not. That idea was altered after Ian witnessed the legendary BB King destroying an auditorium full of music lovers with the Memphis Blues. Ian transferred from violin school (Eastman School of Music) to guitar school (Berklee), and requested all friends call him IB King. It was during his IB days that he created the celebrated dance move The Back Bay Shuffle, which was famously mocked by actor Casey Affleck in the bar scene during the movie Good Will Hunting. At the same time Ian simultaneously was very instrumental in the early days of the burgeoning Neighborhood Nine Blues movement. He served time with various bands, sometimes as a frontman, others as a journeyman and though those that brought Ian into this world mastered the talking cure, Ian found his calling in musical literacy.
Playing in bands led to interacting and working alongside studio engineers, who were both intuitive to the mastering process and most of the time genuinely interesting. Ian dropped the IB and his next chapter was recording friend’s bands. He interned at New Alliance, where he met the indomitable Nick Z, who was balls deep in the mastering studio with projects. Cut to present day where Ian masters, records and plays in bands surrounding his life with endless music. Ian also plays the violin again, ringing-in the classic motto that 'you can take the boy out of the violin, but you can't take the violin out of the boy.'
